The man turned and headed toward her table. He smiled in her direction before she could put herself back into her seat. She rifled through her papers, embarrassed to be caught staring and eavesdropping.
A thick mop of sandy blond hair hung over his forehead. She thought his gait was uneven at first, then attributed it to his having to maneuver between the long wooden tables and high-backed chairs. He was good-looking in a rather straightforward way. Features in all the right places. A smooth, broad forehead and neat eyebrows above glacier-blue eyes. Nicely shaped lips broke easily into a smile.
“Hello. You’ve got some work there.” He nodded at the materials that spread out two feet on either side of her. He put down the gigantic pile of books he carried.
“Yes, a research project for a patron. It’s been going on a while now.”
“You work here?”
“In research, yes.”
His eyes lit up as if with recognition. “Oh, you must be the Elizabeth.”
“The?”
He laughed again. It was a warm, melodious sound, so natural it was clearly something he did often.
‘I’m James, by the way. Circulation.”
“Oh, right. I’ve…” She stopped, not wishing to let on that anyone had told her about him.
James smiled, his right eyebrow slightly arched.
“A pleasure to meet you, Elizabeth.” He bent at the waist, arm sweeping down gallantly like Sir Walter Raleigh might have done. She couldn’t help but squirm, heat rushed across her cheeks.
“Right. Good to meet you too.” Embarrassed by her business-like tone, Elizabeth fingered the edges of her notepad. She glanced down at her papers and back up at him. He seemed to take it as a hint to leave.
Grabbing the stack of books, he nodded at her and walked off. The uncomfortable silence threatened to break the spell that had just been cast.
“Until we meet again, James.” She tried a light tone, but feared she might have sounded like her grandmother instead.
“See ya around, Elizabeth. The Elizabeth.” He chuckled and she enjoyed hearing his laugh again. She watched him walk nearly a block’s length of the room. He did have a slight limp. Was he trying harder to hide it assuming she would be watching? He might be a proud person. She thought about the Great War so many men hadn’t survived.
